Visit to Peniscola old town and castle

After a chilly night, today has been a beautiful clear day.  Perfect for cycling along the prom to visit the old town and castle on the rock. Along the way - A dragon guarding the children's play area....
... and a photo to claim a virtual geocache.  We had to post a photo replicating Charlton Heston as El Cid, sword in hand, on his horse ....  (film was made here in 1961)
On reaching the foot of the old town, we had to decide which way to go up to the castle....
Amazing views of the sea, beach, town and mountains on the way up.
 Today's picnic spot.
 Into the castle.
Built by the Knight's Templars 1294-1307, it then became the pontifical seat of Pope Benedict XIII, known as Papa Luna, in 1411.  He died here in 1423.
Illuminated Bible from the time of the Templars - OT stories with characters as knights.
 A great castle to explore.
And to look out at the views.
And down to the tacky gift shops of the old town.

 A couple of today's tourists.
 One of the churches.
A cormorant down on the rocks.
Then a stroll through the Artillery park below (included in the entrance fee of 3.50€).
Notice the small white blob in the centre between the trees .....
...... a visitor soaking up the sun.
An evening stroll to see the old town at night.
